Changes to the Bye-Laws

Changes to the Bye-Laws and new guidelines for bidding for organisation of COMPUMAG conferences were approved on December 22, 2003. The Bye-Laws and the new guidelines can be viewed here.

Post conference publication

The following is on behalf of the ICS Board to explain the situation regarding the post conference publication in the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics. As you are probably aware the costs of IEEE publications are continuously rising and have become the most significant component in the conference registration fee. To give you some appreciation of these expenses the full cost would add over 300 US dollars to each registration fee. The ICS Board has decided that we need a debate amongst all members of the Society regarding the future of this publication and we are currently in the process of investigating various alternatives. When this is completed we will invite comments from all members so that we can plan the future.

In the meantime, it was felt to be important to take a decision regarding the forthcoming COMPUMAG in Saratoga Springs. It has, therefore, been decided to reduce the burden of the publication costs and thus only partially cover them by the registration fees. As a result the remaining contribution will have to come directly from the authors whose papers are accepted after the final reviewing process. Thus approximately half of the total IEEE cost will be included in the fee and the remaining amount will be collected later after the second review process has been completed. Although we appreciate that this decision may not necessarily be the one which will be adopted at future conferences, we feel that it is fair on the participants and has the benefit of not accelerating the costs unduly. The information about the fees may be found on the conference web page.

Jan Sykulski, Secretary
